Going to church

I had a good night's sleep last night. However, I was in the top bunk on the 2nd floor of an 8 person dorm, and it smelled like the odor  of everybody's wet towels let's drifting into my space.

Good tip for the day: never play trivial pursuit in a country where you do do not know the language.

The hostel was in the old part of the city, which made it a perfect starting place for doing a little exploring around town. It was going to be a short stage today so I had some extra time.

This is a Protestant cathedral which really surprised me because usually they are not as fancy as the Catholic ones.

A little bit of history for you here.

Not too far away was the incredible and famous cathedral of Strasbourg.

It is so big that it is literally impossible to get it all in one photo. I had to use wide angle just to get this.

The detail of even one arch is astounding. But wait until you get inside.

The rose window is huge and a masterpiece of design.

The front altar.

I think this is actually a glockenspiel. It looks like the figures at the top will actually move at certain times of the day.

Beautiful stained glass all around.

Another picture of the rose window, just to give you some perspective of the size.

Construction of the cathedral started in 1015 and did not finish until 1439. The spire height of four hundred and sixty six feet made it the tallest building in the world from 1647 to 1874.

Seriously. I think that aliens must have aided in that the construction of this.

With exploring finished, it was time to mount my steed and hit the trail again.

More canal boats.

And i'm back up on the flood dike for the Rhine.

This ship was so long. It was actually hinged in the middle to make it more maneuverable.

It's lunch time.

Same ship, now in a lock and being lowered to the next river level.

Drusenheim, this year, celebrated eighty years since it's liberation from Nazi Germany.

And here is where I'm spending the night in Drusenheim.

While here I met a family from Melbourne,  Australia. Jem and Jasmine, their daughter Billie and son Banjo. Seriously, that is his name!  We joined tables at a nearby pizza restaurant and had a fun conversation.

BTW, did you know that the French put a raw egg yolk on the top of your pizza? Sacrilege!

Back on the road foot 56.5 kilometers tomorrow.
