Schaffhausen, Switzerland to Waldshut, Germany

I got a good night's sleep in my lucky bed (see yesterday) so I was anxious to get started after breakfast. Unfortunately, things got messy pretty soon.

I made it from my hostel down to the official route pretty quickly. Maybe a kilometer or 2 into the route there was another rider coming my direction so I decided to go up on the cobblestone curb/sidewalk and give them some extra room. I must not have gone at a sharp enough angle because the front wheel decided to stay on the road side of the curb which sent me flying off the bike and onto the sidewalk!  The result was some heavily skinned up knuckles and a bad case of road rash on my left forearm.

Amazingly, 5 Swiss angels showed up immediately, assessed my injuries and started to help. One woman even ran down to a pharmacy and got some bandages. She and the others poured sanitizer (Ouch!) on the wounds and bandaged them up the best they could. God sent the right people to help me!

After all that aid, and sitting for a while, I was ready to get back on the road, but not without taking a picture of them! Amazing people are everywhere!

My angels. The woman on the left refused to let me pay her for the bandages and even gave me some extra ones. I used them and some neosporin tonight.

Scuffed up my Road ID wrist band pretty good too. It's still readable and I have other ID and emergency numbers with me, but I'll order a new one when I get home.

But on to nice things.  Most all of today's riding was on the Swiss side of the Rhine.

Ornate fountain in Schaffhausen town square

Over the side of the wall was another mother tending to her eggs.

Unique suspension bridge. There's another bridge in front of it.

Half timbered house.

I believe it is a sunflower field.

Bend in the river.

Nice wooded trail. They refer to these as 4WD trails. We'll, maybe if there was snow on the ground...

The mighty Rheinfall. Wish I could share a video of this. The river roars over the cascading falls and drops 23 meters. Thank you Margaret for giving me some extra information about how best to view the falls!

More pretty poppies.

At first I thought the black cat was real

Cute little park along the river.

I get a kick out of unique bathroom signs.

Sisiphys sculpture In a field.

Got to get my mind out of the gutter!

Little old switch engine

And an old dining car.

Shot through the dining car's window.

Fun yard art.

We had a high wind alert here today and another is out for tomorrow. Gusts up to 29mph, and it seems it is always a headwind, can make even a flat ride feel like hill climbing

Longer stage tomorrow into Basel. 67 kilometers buy I'll manage to make it even longer.

My train ride from Paris to Zurich changed trains in Basel. I feel like I'm making a loop!

Good night.

  2. Thankfully your accident was relatively minor compared to what could have happened. It’s nice to know that there are kind people everywhere.
We really enjoyed seeing all of the red poppies randomly growing in the fields in France. Cori even harvested some seeds to bring back home. I don’t think she had much success growing them here. Pedal on.

I got an early start this morning well, early for me. I wanted to beat the heat today, but I ended up staying out till the best came.  ...
