Across the Rhine again

So much for the author's redirection away from Eurovelo 15. Trying to follow street signs in Germany can drive you nuts! I know it did me.

I will bet I stopped to refer to the guide book at least once for every kilometer that I rode. Street signs are usually on a building and generally only on one building at any intersection. If you're going the wrong way you won't see the sign. There's also a good chance there is no sign. I made many wrong turns today and added an extra 9 miles and hours to the ride.

Enough complaining. German people were very helpful, even the ones that didn't didn't speak  English, in helping me find my way.

I was so happy when I took the ferry back across the Rhine and got my Eurovelo 15 signs back! Plus tonight's hotel is right on the route. That is going to make my morning much easier.

My space capsule bed worked out very well last night. There was plenty of room in there and I was able, in a mixed dorm, to get undressed and dressed without having to use a bathroom stall.

I enjoy seeing decorated streets

Monuments seem to be everywhere!

This was a wrong turn street in Karlsruhe  but I found joy in seeing all the different colored houses.

Finally at the ferry landing

The ferry is named Peter Pan, but it didn't go to Neverland.

Much of the day was spent riding on or by dikes. It's nice and level riding, but I miss some variation.

I scared a deer! He lept across the road and into the bushes, away from the river. I heard him crashing around in the there, but then someone in front of me pointed at the river. He had left the bush and was in the river swimming!  When he got back near the bank we stopped bike traffic so he could get back on dry land. When he did he was gone in a flash.

Cute train carving at a riverside park.

Mama, Papa and babies.

Route turns away from the river and heads to the town of  Speyer.

Pretty flowers on the roadside

My hotel is by the museum of technology. How they got that 747 mounted I will never know.

I can now announce that I am officially over half-way through this route! 701 kilometers out of 1,372. Still a long way to go. There are times this trip feels more like a challenge than a pleasure trip, but I'm still enjoying it. Hope you are enjoying what ever road you are on.

  1. Cori and I are spending a few days in Sunriver, which includes a couple of bicycles. There are a lot of bike trails here, some going along next to the Deschutes River. I thought of you today. We have ridden quite a few miles the past couple of days but I would have to say I’m glad that I am not riding hundreds of miles like you. I’m enjoying your story though.
